Girl Scout troop volunteers

PERINTON - Marion Girl Scout Troop No. 154 volunteered at the 8th annual Celiac Walk in Perinton Park Saturday, May 30. The Cadettes Girl Scouts showed their support by sorting and folding T-shirts Thursday, prior to the event. They also worked the day of the walk from 7:30 to 11 a.m., setting up and handing out T-shirts and event bags.

There were over 650 people at the walk. Seeing all these people made the Scouts realize how many folks are affected by celiac. The disease touches two of the girls in the troop, one of the members, Sabrina, has celiac disease and a member's mom has celiac.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. A protein found in wheat, rye and barley causes the body's immune system to attack the lining of the small intestine. One in 133 Americans have celiac, according to a recent study by the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland. That amounts to nearly 3 million people in the United States. Most are undiagnosed.
