


Sanctuary at Crowfield Farm announces programs
NEWARK - Sanctuary at Crowfield Farm located at 2480 Arcadia Zurich Norris Road is a not-for-profit education center offering workshops, internships, retreats, and activities that honor and nurture self, community and the earth.
The Sanctuary has announced the following program schedule:
Sunday, June 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Drum-making: Learn to make a frame drum.
All materials and instructions will be provided. Deer hides will be used for the drum head. Bring a carving knife, a 4-in-one file, a bag lunch.
Class is limited to six participants.
Cost is $135. Pre-registration is required.
Saturday, July 25, 9 to 11:30 a.m.
Ecosystem nature photography
Join nature photographer and naturalist Dave Spier for a serendipitous photo hike around Sanctuary at Crowfield Farm. Spier will demonstrate various photography techniques for capturing the beauty of the natural world, while identifying some of the plants and animals encountered and discussing how they inter- relate. Portraying a species as part of its ecosystem can give a photo more meaning and increase understanding and appreciation.
Cost is $20. Pre-registration is requested.
Saturday, July 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pack Baskets
Make a pack basket styled after the famous Adirondack type basket, a rattan basket that works great for camping, canoeing or a trip to the public market. All materials, except straps, will be provided. Bring a bag lunch.
Maximum number of students is 10.
Cost is $100 for a medium basket; $115 for a large. Pre-registration is required.
Saturday, Aug. 15, 9 a.m. to noon
Flintknapping introduction
Get to know the principles of working with stone to create useful points. There will be a chance to spend some time working with various types of stone to begin to understand how to shape flakes into arrowheads, stone knives, etc. Pressure flaking techniques will be the focus for this class. Maximum number of students is 12.
Cost is $50. Pre-registration is required.
Sept. 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Medicine Wheel
Build and learn about the ancient concept and energy of the medicine wheel. For many years, Mary Birchenough has been learning about the wisdom of the four directions as a guide for living. The morning will start with an overview and discussion of the medicine wheel and include some time for personal reflection and group sharing. The afternoon will be spent as a group, collecting stones and building a medicine wheel for community and personal use.
Bring a bag lunch. Bring as large a stone as can be carried from home or any other space that speaks to you. RSVP's are appreciated.

Solo quest with Chris Arthur and Steve Aman
Is it time to go out on the land alone to connect with all the relations? Is it time to spend some alone time contemplating in a safe, natural environment? Chris and Steve have spent much time over many years communing with nature in the most personal ways. Let them be guides and a safety net during this two day, two night quest on the land at Sanctuary.
Maximum number of participants is eight.
Cost is $200. Pre-registration is required.

Two workshops for the price of one
Primitive Cooking with Dick Wlos
Learn how to cook without the usual cooking utensils, using only naturally available items. Cook steak, chicken, fish and bread on a stick, taking time to enjoy the finished product. Coal burning spoon/bowl workshop with EW Quimbaya-Winship
The spoon and bowl are two simple tools that few think about, until they are needed. In this primitive skills workshop, make a wooden spoon or bowl.
From basic safety to shaping to finished product Quimbaya-Winship will guide participants through the process.
Cost for both workshops is $25. Pre-registration is appreciated.
