Be a history buster

LYONS - During the summer, the Museum of Wayne County History will be offering a one-day-a-week camp for third through sixth grade students, which will run for six weeks and focus on local history. The camp will be held 9 a.m. to noon Fridays, from July 3 to 31, and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Museum of Wayne County History at21 Butternut St. in Lyons.

The camp schedule is as follows:

  • July 3: Inmate for a Day. This week will include a special tour of the museum with hands-on experiences and a focus on the lives of Wayne County sheriffs who lived there and the criminals who were imprisoned here.
  • July 10: The Earliest Greatest Man-made American Waterway. Participants will discover the stories, tools and architecture that made the earliest, greatest American man-made waterway work. The day will include a visit to Lock 27.
  • July 17: Canals-R-Us. Campers will explore the life and culture that flourished along the Erie Canal through pictures, songs and stories.
  • July 24: Artist for a Day. Wayne County is and has been the home of many artists. After learning about some local artists, campers will have the opportunity to create their own works of art.
  • July 31: Build Your Own Cobblestone. History busters will learn about the history of cobblestone houses and will have the opportunity to construct their own.
  • Aug. 5: Old Photos, Family and Friends. Campers and their families will be sent on a historic photo scavenger hunt within walking distance of the museum. They are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras: No cameras will be provided. More details to come.

Cost is $10 per camp or $45 for all six camps.
