Elks host carp derby

LYONS - Lyons Elks Lodge No. 869 is sponsoring the 19th annual Carp Fishing Derby June 27 in the Village of Lyons. Fishing for the derby will be permitted between the Route 14 and Leach Road bridges within the village of Lyons on the south bank of the canal.

Registration will be held at the pavilion on the south bank of the Barge Canal from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the day of the derby. The derby will end at 4 p.m.

This event is being held in recognition of National Fishing Week for the purpose of having fun and learning about fishing. The state of New York is offering free fishing on that day with no license being required. All participants in the derby will be required to follow derby rules, which will be available at the time of registration.

Rules include the requirement that all children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult to register and to participate. Each participant will be allowed to enter only two carp in the derby. All fish entered must be alive at the time they are weighed in. All fish entered in the derby must be caught from the south bank of the canal in the area between the Route 14 and the Leach Road bridges. Prizes will be awarded to girls 13 and under; boys 13 and under; girls 14 and older; and boys 14 and older.
