Wegmans announces
employee scholarships

ROCHESTER - Wegmans has announced that 1,423 employees will be awarded college tuition assistance totaling $6 million provided by the Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program for the 2009/2010 academic year.

From the Newark store Brandon Currier, Carlie Lochner, Allison Strub, Benjamin DesCamp, David Nelson, Jon Torres, John Kozlowski, Alexis Smith and Scott Welch.

'Helping young people succeed is one of our most important giving priorities,' said Colleen Wegman, president of the family-owned supermarket chain. 'This program has made a real difference in the lives of so many young people, and it is one of the reasons we have been able to attract the best and brightest to work at Wegmans.'

Since the program began 26 years ago, more than 22,000 Wegmans employees have been awarded scholarships totaling $71 million. Part-time employees are eligible to receive up to $1,500 a year for four years and full-time employees can receive up to $2,200 a year for four years. To receive a scholarship, employees must meet academic and work-performance criteria. Eligibility is also based on a minimum number of work hours over a specified time period. Scholarship applications are reviewed by an outside committee of college admissions professionals and a team from Wegmans. The external committee evaluates such things as SAT scores, grades and extracurricular activities; the internal Wegmans committee evaluates work performance.
