Sodus Youth Impact 5K run

SODUS - For several years, Jim and Karen Buyck organized a 5K for several years to honor the memory of Jason Buyck. Now they have given the race to the community.

The second annual Youth Impact 5k will be run July 25 along the route of the Jason Buyck Memorial 5k Run/Walk. The purpose of the race is to draw attention to the needs of young people in Wayne County and to help fund programming for them in Sodus.

Since 2004, the Mill Street Youth Center has been a safe place for kids to go after school. Average attendance on recreation days in the spring and summer is over fifty. When young people arrive, they find basketball, video games, snacks, music and most of all a place where they are welcome and safe. Operated by Scarlet Thread Ministries, the intention is to demonstrate Jesus' love for these young people in a way that meets a real need. Statistics show that the time right after school is the most dangerous time for kids - it is during this time that they are most likely to be victims of a crime or to participate in at-risk or delinquent behavior.

The goal is to turn this time of risk into a time of promise.

Many of us who have found success have had someone believe in us and challenge us. Whether it is help with a math problem, using a computer for an essay or playing basketball, instead of wandering on Main Street, the Mill Street Youth Center surrounds young people with volunteers who help them discover opportunities, avoid trouble and choose good paths for their lives.

To help support local young people on their run through life, sponsor the race, run in the race or encourage others to run. The first 75 paid registrations will receive a free T-shirt. Registration begins at 8 a.m.; the race at 9 a.m. at the Sodus United Methodist Church on Main Street. For more information and a race application, call 527-6546 or e-mail jayrox@rochester.rr.com.
