Tall ships coming to Sodus Bay

2009 classic boat roundup to be held July 10 through 12

SODUS BAY - During the second weekend of July, tall ships and classic boats from around Lake Ontario will rendezvous at Sodus Point.

The highlight of the roundup will be a parade of boats at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11, when the tall ships and other vessels will travel up the channel and around the Bay.

The public may watch the parade from the piers and other vantage points around Sodus Bay. The ships will also be available for viewing close-up before and after the parade at the Sodus Bay Yacht Club at 7431 Irwin Street and at the adjacent Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association.

Other activities Saturday will include a boating fair at 10 a.m. Local boating-related organizations will have booths on the grounds open to the public, as will Save Our Sodus, Sodus Bay Historical Society, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Sail and Power Squadrons.

Interested sailors can also learn more about the Sodus Bay Yacht Club and Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association. The Sodus Bay Maritime Captains Association will be promoting the Wear It campaign for PFD, life jackets, and raffling off an inflatable PFD.

Expected to attend this year's Classic Boat Round-up are the Canadian ships Playfair and Pathfinder, two brigantines hailing from Toronto. Two schooners and a ketch plus other classic boats are also expected. The parade will also include vessels from Sodus Bay Yacht Club, Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association, the Sodus Point Fire Department, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Wayne County Sheriff's Marine Patrol.

The 2009 Classic Boat Round-up is jointly sponsored by the Sodus Bay Yacht Club, Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association and the Sodus Bay Maritime Captains Association. For more information, call Captain Bob Wood at (585) 330-5934 of e-mail rjwood@rochester.rr.com.
