Big Read community events:

  • Wayne Arts is sponsoring a Chinese Arts exhibit from March 8 to 28 in Little Front Gallery at 108 W. Miller St. in Newark. Hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
  • The Walworth-Seely Public Library is hosting a Big Read kick-off from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 1. John Cieslinski and Librarian Mary Zingerella will explain what exactly the Big Read is and what has been planned for it this first time around. In addition, there will be a show-and-tell by Mary and Doug Mancini, who have visited China, where much of 'The Joy Luck Club' book takes place. From 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, there will be Chinese Language 101. Learn the basics of Chinese, a rich and beautiful language that is the most widely used language in the world. Shirley Cirillo, a patron who grew up in China, is the presenter. For more information, call 986-1511.
  • The Friends of the Macedon Public Library will be hosting a kick-off 1 p.m. March 5. The discussion topics will be 'Why a Big Read?' and 'Why the Joy Luck Club?' Karen Yatteau will also give a brief overview of the game Mah Jong a solitaire game where the player is challenged to find matching pairs of images and eliminate them from a board. The game is a theme throughout 'The Joy Luck Club', and its importance in Chinese culture will be discussed. Afterward, there will be a weekly Mah Jong group. Call 986-5932 for more information.
  • At noon Monday, March 9, The Friends of the Palmyra Library will be hosting a book review by Marsille and a luncheon. Cost is $4 per person. Sign up by March 7. Call the library at 597-5276.
  • Mah Jong will also be taught, played and discussed by Yatteau at Village Bookmarket on Main Street in Palmyra at 10:30 a.m. March 7.
  • The Village Bookmarket will hold a presentation and discussion on 'Book Group How-To' at 10:30 a.m. March 11 for anyone interested in joining or beginning a book group. The Big Read and 'The Joy Luck Club' provide an excellent opportunity for those interested in book groups.
  • Books, ETC will hold a discussion of 'The Joy Luck Club' at 4 p.m. March 22. A similar discussion will be held 10:30 a.m. March 25 at the Village Bookmarket.
  • Books, ETC will host 'Generations: Discussions Between Parent and Child' 2 p.m. March 28, and 'Writing Themes from 'The Joy Luck Club' 7:30 p.m. March 31.

A calendar of events for The Big Read is available at all participating libraries, at Village Bookmarket and at Books, ETC.

  • Village Bookmarket and Books, ETC are also joining Rochester-area booksellers in the 'Great Read/Good Deed' on March 20, 21 and 22, where 10 percent of purchases made at the shops will be donated to Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County. Monroe County booksellers participating include: Before Your Quiet Eyes, 439 Monroe Ave., Rochester; Greenwood Books, 123 East Ave., Rochester; Small World Books, 425 North St., Rochester; Yankee Peddler Bookshop, 274 N. Goodman St., Rochester; and Yesterdays Muse, 32 West Main St., Webster.
