Legion Auxiliary provides financial assistance to veterans and families NEWARK - The American Legion Auxiliary Department of New York has instigated a new program that provides financial assistance to any veteran who has served honorably within the last four years or who is currently serving in the Armed Forces. A veteran must be a resident of New York, but doesn't have to be a member of the American Legion or Auxiliary. Cash assistance is in the form of a grant that does not have to be paid back. Maximum available is $1,500. Grants are not based on income levels, but on the needs of the family requesting assistance. Monies are available to assist in covering the cost of maintaining basic family needs, such as shelter, food, utilities and health expenses. Newark American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 286 can provide application forms and help with the application process. For more information, call Carol Quagliata at 331-2155.
