Sterling Nature Center announces upcoming programs

STERLING - The following programs are scheduled at the Sterling Nature Center this spring:

Cayuga Naturally, 2009 Photo Contest

Capture a favorite place for hiking, canoeing, fishing, hunting or other outdoor activity, as well as the beauty of the streams, lakes, trees, wildflowers, birds, animals and other aspects of nature in Cayuga County.

All photos must be taken in Cayuga County and be of nature related subjects. For an official entry form send a stamped self-addressed envelope to Sterling Nature Center Photo at P.O. Box 216 in Sterling 13156. Entries are due by Oct. 7.

Basket Weaving with Natural Dyes

Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m.

See the colors nature provides and weave a small basket with Linda Remig. Plan an afternoon of weaving fun and take home a useful basket. Pre-register by March 25 by calling the center at 947-6143 or e-mail snc@co.cayuga.ny.us. The Friends of Sterling Nature Center are covering the materials cost for this program, so the program is free and open to the public.

Poetry

Sunday, March 29 at 3 p.m.

Monthly poetry gatherings will resume, hosted by Jim Pangborn and Charles Itzin. Fine regional poets will read their work and discuss the art of imaginative writing. Programs are free. Refreshments are reasonably priced.

Natural Egg Dying

Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m.

Discover what colors can be retrieved from a pantry, just in time for the spring table. Use natural dyes to color eggs. Bring boiled eggs to dye. An adult should accompany children. Program is free and open to the public.

Life in a Forest Puddle

Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m.

Join interpretive naturalist Jim D'Angelo for a look into the vernal pools of Sterling Nature Center. Vernal pools are small wetlands that temporarily fill with water, providing essential habitat for frogs, salamanders, turtles and even a few snakes. Group will explore these unique wetlands looking for spotted salamanders, fairy shrimp, tadpoles and other wildlife that utilize them. A short slideshow presentation will be conducted before the hands-on outdoor nature study. Dress for the weather and wear boots to wade into the wetland. Program is free and open to the public.

Sunday Poetry Coffeehouse

Sunday, April 26 at 3 p.m.

The Sterling Nature Center's Sunday Coffee House will host its spring poetry reading at the center's Jensvold Road facility. The afternoon includes readings by regional poets, an open reading, refreshments and poetic pastries. Program is free and open to the public.
