Garden Club to meet

PALMYRA - The May 6 meeting of the Palmyra Garden Club will be held at 7 p.m. in the Palmyra Town Hall on Route 21 in Palmyra. The guest speaker will be Dr. Bruce Gilman.

His program on ferns will examine the natural history of fern species found in central and western New York. Both common and rare ferns will be discussed through a slideshow and with mounted herbarium specimens. The protected status of ferns will be highlighted.

Dr. Gilman has taught in the Department of Environmental Conservation and Horticulture at Finger Lakes Community College for the past 33 years. His teaching expertise includes aquatic ecology, field botany and environmental planning. He curates the Finger Lakes Herbarium, a collection of over 12,000 sheets containing plants representative of western New York, and is author of the 'Ontario County Flora'. He serves on the Board of Directors for the New York Flora Association.

The meeting is open to the public, and new members are welcome. Refreshments will be served, and the community birthday calendars are expected to be available for distribution.
