By STEPHANIE KNARR LYONS - Abandoned for many years, the former Riverside Apartment Complex will now be a place seniors can call home. At the grand opening of Canal View Apartments at 90 Montezuma St. last week citizens, government officials and PathStone Corporation celebrated their success in turning what was once an abandoned burden into livable space once again. 'Welcome to your new home,' said Stuart Mitchell, president and CEO of PathStone Corporation, to residents of the new apartments. More than two years ago, PathStone Corporation, formerly Rural Opportunities, approached the village planning board to assess needs of the community. At that time, PathStone Corporation was looking for a use for the Montezuma Street location, site of the former Riverside Apartment complex. The nine buildings had been abandoned for many years Built in in 1974 and opened in 1975, the Riverside Apartment complex was a 70-unit facility and operated for for many years, until it fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. Working with the village, PathStone turned the complex into a 36-unit, two story facility that overlooks the Erie Canal and offers many amenities, such as on-site laundry facilities, a community room, private screened-in porches and a computer lab. 'The village of Lyons is working hard to improve the quality of life for its citizens,' said Village Trustee Terry VanStean at the grand opening. VanStean, part of the village planning board, said that PathStone has assisted with the village's attempts to revitalize downtown. Amy Casciani, who coordinated the project, recognized several members of her field team, including Michael Santelli, of Lyons. 'Mike is a wonderful advocate for the community,' she said.
