Sodus Point information center
opens for season

SODUS POINT - The information center in Sodus Point, located in Willow Park, next to the playground, will open May 23 for Memorial Day weekend and will be open weekends through June 20. From June 20 through Sept. 6, it will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The new Wayne County visitors guide is available at the center. The guide offers info. on local museums, historical sites, parks, as well as accommodations, restaurants, boat launches, charter boats and more.

The information center will also have 'I Love New York,' 'Hiking and Biking,' and various county pamphlets.

The center is an historical building. It was used years ago by workers employed by the coal trestle. The workers would come to the building to get their work assignments, so they would know which ship the coal was to be loaded onto.

The coal came by railroad from Pennsylvania. After the ships were loaded in Sodus Point, the coal was taken to Oswego or Canada.

The coal trestle, which burned down in 1971, was replaced by a marina.
