Death Notices          January-March '99

Lada, Edmund S. - Edmund S. Lada, 87, died January 23, 1999 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Mr. Lada was born September 1, 1911 in Rochester. He was a factory worker for Eastman Kodak Co. when he retired in 1973. He was a member of the Fairville Presbyterian Church, Newark Elks Lodge #1249 and was a charter member of the Fairville Volunteer Fire Department, since 1956. Spring interment in Fairville Cemetery. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Denise Lada of Newark; daughter and son-in-law Desiree and William Benet of Rochester; grandson Michael Lada; brother Anthony Lada of Macedon; sisters Martha Zielinski and Agnes Konieczny both of Rochester. His wife Dorothy Aab Lada predeceased Mr. Lada on June 5, 1990.

Haskins, Paul Frederick - Paul Frederick Haskins, 84, of Union Street, Westfield, New York died Jan. 4, 1999 at St. Vincent Health Care Center in Erie, PA. Mr. Haskins was born February 27, 1914 in Marion to Frederick Edward and Katherine (Van Lare) Haskins. He graduated from Marion High School in June 1934. He was a customer equipment service man for the American Can Company in Geneva. He retired in 1974. He married Caroline Brundige on July 5, 1938 in Ontario. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Westfield, NY where he served as a Trustee and was active in the building committee. He was a member of the Schrine Ismailia Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Buffalo, Marion Lodge No. 926 of the Free and Accepted Masons, the Valley of Jamestown Chapter Consistory and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #118 in Westfield. Interment will be in Marion Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter Margaret Jacobs of St. Peters, Missouri; son Robert F. Haskins of Palatine, Illinois; grandchildren David and Daniel Haskins, Robert, Lisa and Heather Jacobs; brother Vincent Arthur Haskins; sisters, Rachel Katherine Drave and Esther Naomi Haskins. He was predeceased by David Haskins and Caroline "Connie" Haskins.

Woolworth, Hilda M. - Hilda M. Woolworth, 76, of Newark, died Jan. 22, 1999 at the County Nursing Home, Lyons. Interment in Sodus Rural Cemetery. Hilda is survived by two sisters, Harriet Miner of Sodus and Lela (Ralph) Langdon of Lock Berlin; brother, James (Gwen) Woolworth of Sodus; several nieces and nephews.

Austin, Anita Lynch - Anita Lynch Austin, 65, of Palmyra, died January 23, 1999 in Clifton Springs Hospital. Anita was born in Macedon on December 10, 1933 to Lloyd and Mildred Lynch. She married E. Francis Austin in November 1956. A lifelong member of Palmyra, she was active in church and community service. She taught English at Pal-Mac High School for many years. Anita is survived by her sons, Aaron (Kelley) Austin of Palmyra and Adam of California; daughters, Amy (David) Schade of Massachusetts and Annaliese (Scott) Parker of Macedon; grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Austin, Caley Austin, Peter, Alyssa and Benjamin Schade, Jeremy and Joshua Parker; sisters, Mary Jane Bogart, Lynda (Ned) Nation, Sally Lynch, all of Palmyra and Katherine (Alex) Scotti of NJ; uncles, Vincent and William Lynch of Palmyra; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl Francis Austin and son, Lloyd Andrew Austin.

Smith, Laurence Joseph - Laurence Joseph Smith, 44, of Newark, died Sunday, January 24, 1999. Laurence was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 13, 1955, the son of Laurence J. and Elizabeth Ebinger Smith. He had lived in Rochester and worked for the Coca Cola Co. Interment in Port Gibson Cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Joseph of Newark; brother, Joseph Lombardi of Newark; sister, Connie Smith of Port Gibson; nieces and nephews, including Todd Lombardi; aunts and uncles; best friends, James Rodak, Scott Speers, and Dave Brown. He was predeceased by his stepfather, Arthur Joseph, and a sister, Tina Lombardi.

Bush, Marie Brockhuizen - Marie Brockhuizen Bush, 72, died January 11, 1999. Marie was born in Holland, the daughter of Herman and Adriana Brockhuizen. She was a long time employee of the First National Bank, in Marion, member of the United Church of Marion, Women of the Moose, Palmyra. She was active in the Conservative Party in Wayne County, of which she was chairman. Interment in Marion Cemetery. She was the widow of Sanford C. Bush, who died in 1989. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Howard (Paula) Bush of Richmond, VA, Richard (Catherine) Bush of Canandaigua, Robert Bush of Penfield; 4 grandchildren, Jamie, Jeffery Bush of Richmond, VA, Ashley and Nathan Bush of Canandaigua; 4 brothers, Thomas (Mabel), Herman (Patricia), Edward, Robert (Deanna) Brockhuizen, 3 sisters, Cora (Kenneth) Graham, Minnie VanKouwenberg, Ann (Harlan) Tyler; several nieces and nephews.

Giesy, Marian G. - Marian G. Giesy, 88, died Jan. 24, 1999 at her Newark home. She was born in the Town of Arcadia, January 25, 1910, to John and Mary Norris Engels. She worked for more than 30 years as a nurse at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Surviving are a son, Lewis (Wilma) Giesy of Palmyra; daughter, Joan (Edward) Marriott of Lyons; granddaughters, Lauri Shevlin of Webster, Lisa Wissick of Palmyra, Michelle Fries of Marion, Kelli Tarkowski of NJ; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Willard of HI and Mildred Lundy of FL; sister-in-law, Amelia Engels of Lyons; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ivan in 1979; a son Alan, and two brothers.

Zazzara, Louise A. -Louise A. Zazzara, 81, died Tuesday, January 26, 1999 at the Newark Manor Nursing Home. Louise was born the daughter of Fred and Flora Sigafoni Janto, on December 12, 1917 in Clyde. She was a member of St. Michael Church in Newark. Spring interment in South Lyons Cemetery. Mrs. Zazzara was predeceased by her husband Louis in 1983. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, including Marian Chetney of Manchester, Betty (Marvin) Reese of Rochester and Sandra (Ray) Dyer of North Carolina; special friends Mary Jane Smith and Art Williams.

Vanderlinde, Emily K. - Emily K. Vanderline, 74, of Fish Farm Rd., Sodus died January 27, 1999 at the DeMay Living Center, Newark. Mrs. Vanderlinde was born in Marion on November 6, 1924, the daughter of Augustus and Nellie DeNering Vercrouse. She was a member of the Fairville Presbyterian Church and the Fairville Fire Department Auxiliary. She had worked for Hanover Distributors of Sarah Coventry in Newark for 13 years. Survivors include her husband, David; daughter Linda (Randall) Rider of Clifton Springs; four grandchildren Timothy Vanderlinde, Jeremy Vanderlinde, Matthew Rider and Crystal Rider; two great-grandchildren Jacob and Mara Vanderlinde; two sisters, Charlene (Jacob) Frank of Lyons and Dorothy (William) Poole of Phelps; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son Larry Vanderlinde in 1984 and brother Richard Vercrouse in 1972. Interment in Fairville Cemetery.

Persyns, Nellie P. - Nellie P. Persyns, 77, of Palmyra, died January 11, 1999. She was a member of Daughters of St. Anne, and James R. Hickey Post 120 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Julius; children, Julie (Stephen) Kuhn, Bradley Persyns; son-in-law Russel Goebert; grandchildren, Janine (Acy) Buckland, Theresa (Bob) Havrilla, Christopher (Kelly) Goebert, Scott Allen, Ryan (Shelly) Allen, Eric (Diane) Persyns, Laura Persyns, Jeremiah Persyns; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Sapp, Billie Sue - Billie Sue Sapp, 71, of Welcher Road, Newark died Jan. 15, 1999, at Rochester General Hospital. Mrs. Sapp was born in Prestonburg, Kentucky on Sept. 7, 1927. The daughter of Charlie and Polly Prader Osborne worked at Edgett and Burnham Co., and Seneca Foods in Marion. She was a member of the Church of God in Newark. Spring interment in Fairville Cemetery. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Fred Sr.; son, Fred Jr. (Nancy) of Macedon; a grandson and great-grandson; five sisters; a brother; nieces and nephews.

Frownfelter, Willamee Y. - Willamee Y. Frownfelter, 85, of Driving Park Avenue, Newark died Jan. 16, 1999, at ViaHealth of Wayne. Willamee was born in Wilmington, NC on Mar. 27, 1913 to George and Grace Brington Yeagle. She was a stenographer for the S. Williamsport Hospital and was a member of New Hope Bible Church. Interment in Green Lawn Memorial Park, S. Williamsport, PA. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, George A.; two nieces, Sally (Dale) Ackerman of Locke, and Cynthia (Carl) Ball of Brooktowndale.

Albertson, Leonora (Betty) - Leonora (Betty) Albertson, 77, died January 17,1999 after a brief struggle with cancer. After 35 years of teaching, Betty retired from Marion Central School District. In her retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling. She continued as a tatting instructor throughout the U.S. She is survived by her children: Pam Derbyshire, Derry (Molly) Jackson, Ann Luise (Andy) Steensma, Luci (Chris) Hadlock; 8 grandchildren; companion, George Schwallie.

Salerno, James S. - James S. Salerno, 94, died Jan. 18, 1999 at DeMay Living Center, Newark. He was born in Clyde on Sept. 18, 1904, to Santo and Angelina Salerno. He was a farmer, employed by Mitchell Farms of North Rose. Spring interment in Huron Evergreen Cemetery. Surviving are his wife Elsie (Crocker) Salerno of Lyons; his children, Patricia (Leon) Fox of Rose, Vincent (Mahoto) Salerno of Rose, Joseph (Wilma) Salerno of Clyde, Joanne (George) Dehm of Wolcott, Nancy Foro, of Ohio, Anthony Salerno of Watertown, Donna (Thomas) Wilcox of Cheektowaga, Doris Pentycofe of Newark, Pearl (Robert) Pentycofe of Sodus, Betty Bennett of McGraw, Laura Riggs of Lyons, Jean (Charles) Lindstrom of Newark, Gary Campbell of Wolcott, Linda (Leslie) Powell of Wolcott; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; brother, Peter Salerno of Clyde; and sister, Tina Montemorano of Clyde. Mendez, Bernardo - Bernardo Mendez, 62, of Newark, died Jan. 6, 1999, at ViaHealth of Wayne. Bernardo was born in Cuba on March 4, 1936. He served in the Cuban Armed Forces under Fidel Castro, and he was a doctor in the Cuban service. He traveled in California, had managed a motel, and he had worked at Ragu Foods in Rochester. He was a resident of St. Elizabeth's Home in Newark. Interment will be in East Newark Cemetery. He is survived by several friends.

Evans, Ann Collins - Ann Collins Evans, 82, of Cherry Street, Lyons, died Jan. 6, 1999, at her home. Ann was born in Lyons on April 29, 1916, the daughter of Cornelius and Lisitta Bremer Collins. She was a lifelong resident of Lyons, after being raised in Colorado with Native Americans. She attended Syracuse University and was a world-renowned equine artist. She was a member of St. Michael's Church, Lyons, where she was a member. Interment will be in Lyons Rural Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Laramie; daughter, Larry Ann Evans of Lyons; grandson, Alexander Calvo; and sister, Ellen Gardner of Lyons.

Smith, Myrtle Smith - Myrtle Smith, 85, of Newark, died January 8, 1999 at the Blossom View Nursing Home, Sodus. Mrs. Smith was the third of seven children, born October 8, 1913 to George and Edith Fry Entz in Flint, NY. She married Wilbur Smith in 1936 and they raised their family in Newark. She worked and retired from the Smith Metal Works in Newark, where her husband was the proprietor. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church, Newark. Interment at the Memorial Springs Shores Presbyterian Church, in Ocala, Florida. Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Wayne (Janice) Smith of Palmyra; daughter, Gail McDougal of North Rose; grandchildren, Adriane Smith, Michelle and Cam McDougal; sisters, Edith DeVries of Newark and Pearl Fisk of Dublin: nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Smith in 1973; her son-in law, George McDougal in 1998; her brother, John Entz; sisters, Sarah O'Connor, Vivian Donk and Bernice Simmons.

DuBois, Donald L. - Donald L. DuBois of Walworth, 61, died unexpectedly Jan. 10, 1999. He was the owner of Jake's Bar & Grill in Marion. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Flint DuBois; daughter, Deborah (William) Watters of N. Collins, NY; special brother-in-law, James (Pamela) Flint of Fairport; special friend, Elizabeth "Beth" Morrison of Marion; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Schindler, Edmund H. - Edmund H. Schilnder of Arcadia, 85, died Jan. 8, 1999 at Clifton Springs Hospital. He was a member of the Humanity Lodge #406 F&AM in 1949 of Lyons and later transferred to Newark Masonic Lodge in 1960. He was a past patron in the Eastern Star in Newark and an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Doris; sister, Rose DeWind, of Lyons; his beloved dog, Jack; several nieces and nephews.

Colarocco, Barry James - Barry James Colarocco of Peirson Ave., Newark died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999. Barry was born in Lyons, the son of Frank and Delia Buttaccio Colarocco. He was a photographer and operated the Village Studio in Newark and Lyons for 20 years; he also owned Impressions Limosine Service. He was a past president of the Newark Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Lyons Elks Lodge, St. Michaels Church and the Marbletown Fire Dept. Interment in Newark Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Miles Colarocco; son, Dino (Amy) of New Jersey; daughter, Ashley Colarocco of Fairport; two grandchildren, Justin and Dana; his mother, Delia Colarocco of Newark; brother, Tom (Nellie) of Newark; stepmother, Sally Colarocco of Newark; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Cuvelier, Jennie - Jennie Cuvelier, 85, of Newark, died January 2, 1999, at ViaHealth of Wayne. Jennie was born in Holland on June 6, 1913, daughter of Willem and Sarah Goethals Cuvelier. She was a bookkeeper for Hallagan Manufacturing of Newark, and she was a member of Arcadia Reformed Church. Interment in East Newark Cemetery. She is survived by a sister, Jacomina (C. Richard) McCray of Canandaigua and a brother, Jacob of Newark.

Laws, Richard J. - Richard J. Laws of Macedon died January 3, 1999. Survived by wife Margaret; sons, David (Diane) of Boston, Jeffrey (Heather) of Marion; grandchildren, Jason, Alisha and Emma; three sisters, Betty Bauerschmidt, Shirley Mendez and Nancy Zito; brother, Wayne; nieces and nephews.

Fisher, Loretta A. - Loretta A. Fisher, 80, of Brooksville, Florida, formerly of Clifton Springs, died Jan. 1, 1999, at Vencor Hospital of Tampa. Born in Elmira, she moved to Florida 13 years ago from Clifton Springs. She was a retired nurse's aide and Presbyterian by faith. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #2883 in Newark, and Kuntry Kuzzins Square Dancers. She is survived by her husband, Arnold; daughters Laura "Micki" (Ron) Fagner of Newark, Jackie Call-Mastrodonato (Richard) of Rochester, Zelda (Ken) Johns of Phelps and Joretta (Tom) Gorall of Clyde; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Laura Rickerson of Newark. She was predeceased by her sons, Robert and Bruce.

Batterby, Gladys E. - Gladys A. Batterby, 75, of Palmyra died January 4, 1999. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert C. Batterby; foster mother, Nellie Coughlin; brothers, Arthur Crosby, George Taylor. She is survived by her children, Karl, Anne, Jim Batterby, all of Palmyra, Elaine Batterby of Macedon; sister, Mary (Len) Viccaro of AZ; many nieces & nephews.

DeRue, Elizabeth S. - Elizabeth S. DeRue, 89, of Sodus, died Jan. 4, 1999 at the Newark Manor Nursing Home. Interment in Marion Cemetery. She was predeceased by her husband, Cornelius in 1991. She is survived by four daughters, Eleanor Redder and Jane (David) White all of Sodus, Betty (Frederick) Button of Pittsford, Diane (Richard) Viniski of Hampton, VA; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Ganage, John - John Ganage, 93, died Jan. 6, 1999 at DeMay Living Center in Newark. He was born May 5, 1905 in Newark to Fritz and Anna Boerne Ganage. John was a retired truck driver. Interment in Newark Cemetery. He is survived by daughters, Ida Tolbert of Newark, Betty Zito of Avon, and Marie (Carl) Soliman of Marion; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Tricarico, John Sr. - John Tricarico, Sr., 90, of Lyons, died Jan. 28, 1999, at Clifton Springs Hospital after an illness. Mr. Tricarico was born in Brooklyn, the son of Rocko and Maria Bonomo Tricarico. He was later employed at J.L. Hammett Company in Lyons. Spring interment in South Lyons Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Anna (Scott) Tricarico of Lyons; three sons, Ronald (Patricia) of Ohio, Richard (Harriet) of Newark and Eugene (Susan) of Ohio; daughter, Mary Ann C. VanHanehan of Lyons; stepson, Donald (Denise) Scott of California; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary; son, John Jr.; and two grandsons.

McMahon, Donald R. - Donald R. "Fuzzy" McMahon, 73, of Keuka Park, died Jan. 28, 1999, at his home. Mr. McMahon was born June 18, 1925 in Geneva, the son of Thomas G. and Reitha Marlow McMahon. He served with the Fifth Armored Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. A postmaster for 23 years, he worked at the Dresden Post Office, the Branchport Post Office, and retired in 1986 from the Marion Post Office. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, and a life member of the Dresden Fire Dept. He also belonged to the National Association of Postmasters, Penn Yan VFW and the Dresden American Legion. Interment in St. Michael's Cemetery, Penn Yan. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy R. McMahon; two sons, James M. (Bonna) McMahon of Dresden and Donald Andrew of Farmington; one daughter, Mrs. (Peter) Nancy Brevet of Newark; grandsons, Matthew Brevet and Kevin McMahon; two brothers, Thomas (Charlotte) McMahon of Oneonta, Robert (Naomi) McMahon of Palmetto, FL; several nieces and nephews.

McHugh, M. Dolores - M. Dolores McHugh, 93, of Newark, died Tuesday, February 2, 1999, at her home. Mrs. McHugh was born on May 22, 1905 in Olean, a daughter of Henry and Mary Elizabeth Lang Sigel. She moved to Newark in 1986, where she became a communicant of St. Michael's Church. Before moving to Newark, she had lived in Depew, since 1920. She had been a business teacher at Depew Central High School, retiring in 1966. She also taught at St. Mary's School and Our Lady of Pompei School both in Lancaster, NY. She had been a member of the Bishops Committee in the Diocese of Buffalo, a member of St. James Church and the Rosary Society in Depew, and the NYS Retired Teachers Assoc. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lancaster, NY. She is survived by her son Thomas H. McHugh and daughter-in-law, Linda L. McHugh, both of Newark; four grandchildren, Mark T. McHugh of NYC, Maria R. Cavanaugh of Syracuse, Jodi A. (Greg) Tye of Ballwin, MO, and Shannon K. (Thomas) McHugh-Power of Shrewsbury, MA.; six great-grandchildren, James C. III and Colin Cavanaugh, Sean T. McHugh-Tye, Patrick, Bryan and Jacob Tye. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Leonard J. McHugh in 1972, and two sisters, Clara Sigel and Florence Morton.

Harrington, Frederick Jr. - Frederick Harrington Jr., 92, of Morley Rd., Sodus Point, died February 1, 1999 in Blossom View Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Olive in 1990. He is survived by a son, Frederick III (Judy) of Springwater; four daughters, Jean Scott of Jamesville, Margaret (Alton) Palmer of Brooksville, FL, Mary Alice (Jack) Kelley and Margery (Ivan) Bulriss, all of Sodus Point; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; brother, Henry Harrington of Lyons; sister, Alice (Mike) Melnick of Rochester; three sisters-in-law, Eliza Harrington of North Rose, Margery Bednar of St. Petersburg, FL and Shirley Morris of Chelmsford, MA; several nieces and nephews.

Scott, Pearl N. - Pearl N. Scott, 90, of Walworth, died Feb. 1, 1999. Mrs. Scott was a retired Walworth Postmaster. Interment in Marion Cemetery. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl and her son, Leonard. Survived by three sons, Marvin (Jean) of Walworth, Harold (Sandra) of Palmyra, Richard (Sandra) of Marion; daughter-in-law, Eva Belle Scott of Henrietta; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

Filardo, Mae (Viola) - Mae (Vilardo) Filardo, 86, of Newark, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Via Health-Newark. Mae was born in Pennsylvania on June 13, 1912, the daughter of Frank and Katherine Sergei Viola. She retired in 1980 from C.H. Stuart Co. where she was a secretary. She was a member of St. Michael's Rosary and Altar Society and a founding member of St. Michael's Sacred Heart Mission Club. She was a member of Newark-Wayne Hospital Twigs and did volunteer work. She also did volunteer work at St. Michael's School. Interment in Newark Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Thomas of Dansville and Francis of Newark; two daughters, Marie (Clifford) Montgomery of Chaumont, NY and Katherine (Thomas) Benzel of Syracuse; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Frank (Marge) Viola of Rochester; several nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony, in 1986.

LaPiene, William H. - William H. LaPiene, 90, died Thursday, January 28, 1999, at the DeMay Living Center, Newark. Born in Chatham, Connecticut, he grew up in West Palm Beach, FL, and lived in Baldwinsville 20 years before moving to the Rochester area in 1958. He was a tool and die maker at Brainards, Rochester, and also worked at Crouse-Hinds, Syracuse. Van Hall, Milo - Milo Van Hall, 81, died January 28, 1999. A graduate of Marion Central School in 1935 and Syracuse University in 1938, he was Dean of Students at the State University at Alfred where he began teaching 28 years ago. He accumulated 32 years of perfect attendance in the Rotary Club and was active in the CARE Program in Alfred and Florida. Milo is survived by Jane, his wife of 60 years; daughters Kay (Robert) Vaisey and Jean (Duane) Ball; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Kunow, Elinor L. - Elinor L. Kunow, 75, of Newark, died February 6, 1999 at the DeMay Living Center. Elinor was born in Newark on January 2, 1924, to Edmund and Bertha Rahm Synesael. She retired from Sarah Coventry and was a member of St. Michael's Church. Elinor was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion Auxiliaries. Interment will be in Newark Cemetery. She is survived by son, Norman, of Newark; two brothers, Arnold Synesael of Newark, and Richard Synesael of Palmyra; two sisters, Jeanette Shaw of Hollywood, FL, and Belva Livingston of Indiana; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1986 and a son, Stanley, in 1996.

Carter, Robert L. Jr. - Robert L. Carter Jr., 25, of Newark, formerly of Geneva, died on February 3, 1999. Robert was born in Geneva, July 7, 1973, the son of Robert and Joan Young Carter. He was employed with UltraLife Batteries Inc. of Newark and was a graduate of Geneva High School. Interment in Brookside Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Tammy LaClair Carter of Newark; daughter, Taylor Carter of home; his parents; sisters, Evette Carter Cure and Tammy Carter, both of Geneva; maternal grandmother, Alice Young of Seneca Falls; paternal grandparents, James and Lavinia Carter, both of Geneva; niece, Brittny Cure; nephew, Callyn Cure; and a host of family and friends. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Fred Young.

Love, Isabelle R. - Isabelle R. Love, 86, formerly of South Main St., Newark, died Tuesday, February 9, 1999, at the DeMay Living Center. Mrs. Love was born March 3, 1912 in Sodus, the daughter of Marvin and Ella Miller Rice. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Interment in the Newark Cemetery. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Herbert Love. She was predeceased by her first husband, Clarence Chase in 1967.

Marr, Mary (Nellis) - Mary (Nellis) Marr, age 72, died February 8, 1999. She is survived by four sons, Robert (Kathy), John (Debbie) of Palmyra, Thomas (Mary) of Newark, and Gerald of Lyons; daughter, Patricia (Ron) Hanley of Henrietta; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Nellis of Palmyra; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1994.

Champlin, Glenn - Glenn Champlin, 84, of Newark, died February 10, 1999. He was a retired Sodus Fruit Farmer. Interment in Marion Cemetery. Smith, Earl M. - Earl M. Smith, 85, died February 15, 1999 at the Newark Manor Nursing Home. Mr. Smith was born the son of Walter and Alberta Arnold Smith, August 16, 1913 in Macedon. He was a 1930 graduate of Palmyra High School. He served in the Navy during World War II for nearly four years in the Pacific Theatre. He was employed at Garlock Inc. for almost 35 years, retiring in 1975 from the Quality Control Department. Mr. Smith was a member of the Palmyra Masonic Lodge #248 F.& A.M., August Mauer Post #286 American Legion, and the First Baptist Church of Newark. Interment at Newark Cemetery. He is survived by his devoted wife of seven years, Hazel Cunningham Smith; his stepdaughter, Joan (Gerald) Crider of Newark; five step-grandchildren: Marybeth Crider of Rochester, Amy (Joseph) Langenstein of New Hampshire, Matthew (Marina) Crider of Fairport, Andrew (Cynthia) Crider of Georgia and Michael Crider of Rochester; seven step-great grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold (Dorothea) Smith of Palmyra and Howard (Lois) Smith of Clifton Springs; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his first wife, Josephine Hamidy and his second wife, Ruth (Herrick) Mitchell.

Bassett, Joan L. - Joan L. Bassett, 61, of Canal St., Lyons, formerly of Red Creek and Newark, died Feb. 14, 1999 in Rochester General Hospital. Mrs. Bassett was born in Brownsville, NY on Aug. 9, 1937, the daughter of Alfred and Sarah Michaels Forsythe. She had resided in Lyons since 1986. She was an operator for New York Telephone in Newark, retiring in 1978, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers in Geneva. Interment in Fairmount Cemetery in Red Creek. She is survived by her husband, Richard Bassett of Lyons, whom she married on March 8, 1969; sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Hamelinck of Syracuse and Mrs. Barbara (David) Vine of Sterling; brother, Alfred (Sue) Forsythe of Moyack, NC; four nieces, Deborah Reed, Amy Douglas, Nancy Giovinazzo and Michele Pridgeman; and four nephews, Michael Forsythe, Jay and Christopher Hamelinck, and Guy Vine.

Chilson, Leonard M. - Leonard M. Chilson, 80, of Marion, died February 14, 1999. He was a WWII Army veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart, formerly of Ithaca. Interment Calvary Cemetery, Ithaca. He was predeceased by his son, Leonard. Kneut, Elizabeth - Elizabeth Kneut, 92, of Clifton Springs, died Feb. 14, 1999 at the DeMay Living Center in Newark. Mrs. Kneut was born Dec. 1, 1906 in Clifton Springs, the daughter of Peter and Julia Maslyn. She is survived by two daughters, Alice (James) Klahn of Clifton Springs and Marjorie (Leon) Galens of Rushville; two daughters-in-law, Helen M. Kneut of Newark and Arloa Kneut of Palmyra; 13 grand-children; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, and by her son Robert.

Whipple, Sarah - Sarah Whipple, 90, of Marion, died Feb. 15, 1999. Interment in the Sodus Rural Cemetery. Sarah is survived by her sister, Elsie Kepple of Marion; brother, John DeVey of Ozark, MS; niece, Bonnie Clevenger, Ozark, MS; great-nieces and nephews, Crystal Clevenger, Sally Kellogg, Scott Plyter, Phillip Plyter and Patrick Plyter.

Bernreuther, Jane M. - Jane M. Bernreuther, 79, died in Rochester on February 9, 1999. Born April 3, 1919 in Olean, Jane was the daughter of John and Grace (Heald) Davidson. Jane was a retired social worker for the Wayne County Department of Social Services. Survived by sons, Scott Davidson Bernreuther of Oswego, and Mark Bernreuther of Hilton; grandchildren, Laura, Kathy, David, and Michelle; and five great-grandchildren.

Ridley, Howard J. - Howard J. Ridley, 86, died in Twenty-nine Palms, California on November 17, 1998. Born on January 15, 1917 in Newark, he was the son of Cuyler and Lelah Palmatier Ridley, grandson of Judge Charles Palmatier. Howard graduated from Newark High School in 1934 and from Syracuse University (1947) Cum Laude. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, World War II 1941-46, where he was an instructor of meteorology, having attended Brown University and MIT. Upon discharge from the Air Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant, he later went to California, attended Berkley Law School and lived in the San Francisco and Oakland areas. He was Assistant District Attorney of San Mateo County, CA when he retired in 1975. His retirement years were spent in Twenty-nine Palms; he visited Newark in 1985 and 1991. He is survived by his son Thomas C. Ridley of Folsom, CA; daughters Elizabeth Ridley of Clovis, CA and Patricia Tepper of San Diego. He was predeceased by brother Donald of Florida, and wife, Frances of California.Spring interment in Newark Cemetery.

Bogaerd, George J. - George J. Bogaerd, 75, of Peirson Ave., died Feb. 17, 1999 at ViaHealth of Wayne, Newark campus. Mr. Bogaerd was born May 29, 1923 in the town of Arcadia, son of August and Stephanie DeVries Bogaerd. He had worked in the press room at Garlock, Inc. for over 39 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Michael's Church and the Arcadia Senior Citizens. George was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the Newark Food Closet. He was a member of the Arcadia Memorial Post #2883, VFW, and served with the 2080th Quartermaster Truck Co. during World War II in India and Burma. Interment in Newark Cemetery with military honors. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Grace (Baker) and a son, William (Mary Ann) Bogaerd of Rochester; two stepsons, Richard (Donna) and Ronald VanNorman of Newark; six grandchildren: Kristina, Justin, Amy, Jay VanNorman, Joseph and Nicholas Bogaerd. Also surviving is a sister Marie "Pat" Dhondt of Newark, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Emma Rommel.

Bixby, Johanna M. (DeMarree) - Johanna M. (DeMarree) Bixby, 83, of Sodus, died February 16, 1999. She was a member of the Pultneyville Reformed Church and the Sodus Go-Getters. Interment in Furnaceville Cemetery. Monje, Judith L. - Judith L. Monje, 48, of Orange, died on February 18, 1999 Mrs. Monje was born in Syracuse on March 8, 1950, the daughter of Marshall J. Grauer of Syracuse and the late Sally Hoffman Van Veghten. She was the Assistant Vice President of Business Development for Dun & Bradstreet, Government Services Office in Arlington, VA. She was a resident of Orange for 12 years. Survivors include her husband, Lance A. Monje; brother, Justin Grauer of Ridgefield; step-father, Gary Van Veghten of Little Falls; three step-sisters, Bonnie Abbott, Ginny Markwardt, Jamie Van Veghten.

Curtis, Joanne - Joanne Curtis, R.N., 54, of Salmon Creek Road, Williamson, died unexpectedly on February 18, 1999. Joanne and husband Robert have both been employed by Myers Community Hospital and Via Health of Wayne for 33 years. Brooks, Wayne Allen - Wayne A. Brooks, 51, died on February 15, 1999, at Dominican Hospital, Santa Cruz, CA. Wayne was born on September 30, 1947, in Rochester, to the late Stephen and Nancy Brooks, formerly of Marion, and later of Melbourne, FL. He graduated from Marion Central High School in June 1965. Wayne was an Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam war. Survivors include brothers, Carlton of Penfield, Michael and his family of Ontario; aunt, Catherine Warner of Melbourne; aunt and uncle, Pat and Donald Allen, also of Melbourne; and cousins.

Graziano, Mitchell F. - Mitchell F. Graziano, 38, of Lancaster, PA, died unexpectedly at home, on February 19, 1999. Mitchell was born in Oklahoma City, the son of John Graziano of Las Vegas, NV and Carol Frantz of Stockton, MD. He graduated in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in social work from Nazareth College in Rochester, and worked three years at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital as a social worker, before moving to Pennsylvania in 1998. He was most recently employed as a counselor at a Community Services group home in Lancaster, PA. Mitchell enjoyed cooking, movies and rock music. He is survived by his parents; grandmother, Beula K. Frantz of Arcadia, OK; brother, David of St. Petersburg, FL; sister, Angel (Frank) Tracy of Stockton, MD; and aunt and uncle, Debra Frantz and Sam Mecum, with whom he resided.

Millspaw, Ralph B. - Ralph B. Millspaw, 78, of Clyde, died February 20, 1999, at Blossom View Nursing Home in Sodus. Ralph was born March 31, 1920, in Ellington NY, the son of Seth and Mabel McKoon Millspaw. He retired from the Singer Company in Pittsford in 1982 where he was a security guard. He was a former member of the Clyde Masonic Lodge F.& A.M. and he attended the Clyde United Methodist Church. Interment in Cherry Creek Central Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, N. Margaret Sischo Millspaw; four daughters, Carol Finch of Canandaigua, Linda Janto of Albany, Susan Polakiewicz of Newark and Barbara Millspaw of Denver, CO; four sons, Wayne of Poughkeepsie, Russell of Sodus, David of Syracuse and James of Clyde; stepbrother, Arthur Millspaw of Arizona; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Maurice Millspaw.

Shaffer, James A. - James A. Shaffer, 76, of Lyons died at his home on Tuesday, February 23, 1999, after an extended illness. Jim was born Feb. 10, 1923 in Sodus, to Joseph and Blenaire Schriner Shaffer. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army as a corporal, having received the Soldiers Medal. He was employed by the Lyons Water and Sewer Department for 26 years. He was also a member of the Lyons Fire Department, VFW Post #5092 and the American Legion Post #227. Spring interment in South Lyons Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wanda Knight Shaffer; two sons, Edward (Linda) of Lyons and Ron of Lyons; grandson, Paul (Amy) of Lyons; three granddaughters, Ashley and Courtney Shaffer of Camillus, and Stacy (Joe) Salerno of Lyons; great-grandson, Ethan Salerno of Lyons; several nieces and nephews.

Eligh, Alex G. - Alex G. Eligh, 92, died on Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Geneva General Hospital. Mr. Eligh was born May 9, 1906, in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, the son of Frank and Anna McDonough Eligh. He was a member of St. Michael's Church, the Newark Lions Club, and was a proud recipient of the Paul Harris Fellows Award in 1994. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Alice Burke Eligh; his sisters-in-law, Emily Castledine of Ottawa, Ontario, Canand and Eula Burke of Brockville, Ontario, Canada; his nephews, William (Susan) Eligh of Homer, NY, Jack (Nancy) Eligh of Macedon and Willard (Mary Ellen) burke Jr. of Brockville, Ontario, Canada; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews in both the United States and in Canada.

Louise M. Swarthout - Louise M. Swarthout, 70, of Lyons died on February 25, 1999. Survivors included her husband of 50 years, George; her children, Christine (John) Gerg, Richard (Karen) Swarthout, James P. Carpenter; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother Elmer (Eleanor) MacIntyre; sisters, Irene (Joseph) Schmidt and Susan Bradshaw; sister-in-law Thelma Vine; nephew and niece David and Patricia Vine as well as many other beloved relatives. Rosa Nelda "Rosie" Schindler DeWind, of Lyons died on February 25, 1999. Rose was born July 6, on the prairies of Oriska, ND to William and Barbara (Maier) Schindler. Rose graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology and was employed at Eastman Kodak in Rochester for many years. Rose retired from employment at the State Hospital for Special Children in Newark, NY. Rose was a life-long member of the Methodist Church in Lyons. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Cecil) Karpp Lister of Shelton, WA and Judith (Ron) Valenza DuBois of Lyons and Carolina Beach, NC; grandchildren, Gary (Beth) Tabacco of Newark, Cheryl Bremer of Burien, WA, Tina Tabacco of Tacoma, WA, Vince Tabacco of Largo, FL, Will (Sheri) Treinen of Kent, WA, Debbie (Robert) Brown of Sodus, Noel (Eddie) Fowler and Betty Rose Chardeen of Lyons, and Ronnie Chardeen of Carolina Beach, NC; 10 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; one niece; two sisters-in-law, Clara and Doris Schindler. John A. Hodgson "Jack" Hodgson, 80, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at his Newark home. Jack was born in Newark on May, 28, 1918, to Alfred and Jane L. Pahill Hodgson. Alfred passed away in 1932, and Jane in 1949. Jack was employed for 45 years by C.H. Stuart Co. For over 50 years, he was a member of the Newark Country Club. At the country club, he was a respected and avid golfer, arranging and winning many club tournaments. He was a member of St. Michael's Church. Jack was also a World War II Army veteran. He fought for five years in the Pacific Theatre, earned a Purple Heart at the Battle of Saipon, and, in August of 1945 he was discharged with honors. He was a member of the Newark Elks Lodge 1249 and the August Mauer Post 286 of the American Legion. Jack's family and friends will remember him for his great sense of humor and wit. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of over 51 years, Lorraine VanLare Hodgson; three children - John R. of Newark, James (Lonnie Volpe), of Newark, and Sarah Jane (Douglas) Pennington of Canandaigua; a granddaughter, Hannah Elizabeth Swartz of Canandaigua; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Jane O'Leary in 1997 and Katherine Brown in 1986, and a brother, Frances Hodgson. Eleanor Feistel - Eleanor Feistel, 71, of Newark, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at Via Health of Wayne. Eleanor was born in Great Bend, NY, on Oct. 25, 1927, to Charles and Lelah Irwin Pennock. Friends called on March 1 at the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, 500 State St., Carthage, NY. She is survived by a daughter, Trudy Kern of Newark; a son, Roger Feistel of Rochester; two brothers, Frances Pennock of Great Bend and Art Pennock of Rochester; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. Donald E. Pitts - Donald E. Pitts, 75, of Stuart Ave., died on Feb. 28, 1999, at Genesee Hospital in Rochester. Mr. Pitts was born Dec. 2, 1923, in the town of Wolcott, the son of Eugene and Lena Livingston Pitts. For many years, be was a security guard of the Pinkerton Security Services of Rochester. He was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church and the Arcadia Memorial Post 2883, VFW. Don served in the infantry with the Third Army under General Patton in Europe during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maebelle Kiphut Pitts; two daughters, Sharon Clemson and Deborah Jinks, both of Newark, two sons, David Pitts of Clyde and Eugene Pitts of Port Gibson, seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillie Perkins of Fair Haven; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Dayton in 1977.

Josephine E. 'Babe' Craver - Josephine E. "Babe" Craver, 81, formerly of Bartle Ave. in Newark, died on Feb. 25, 1999 at the Wayne County Nursing Home in Lyons. Josephine was born on April 26, 1917 in Newark, the daughter of Anthony and Marion Tavano Palermo. She was a member of St. Michael's Church. Babe had worked in the office of Jackson & Perkins for more than 30 years. She is survived by her son, James A. Moyer of Rochester; two sisters, Katherine Palermo of Newark and Rose Marie (Gary) Lalonde of Auburn; five brothers, Anthony (Jane) Palermo, Paul (Nancy) Palermo, Frank (Betty) Palermo, John (Eleanor) Palermo and Cosmo (Phyllis) Palermo, all of Newark; sister-in-law, Iona Palermo of Newark; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harland Craver in 1995; and brother, Rocco Palermo in 1998.

Richard Cunningham - Richard Cunningham, 80, of Filkins Road, died on Feb. 25, 1999 at ViaHealth of Wayne of Newark after a brief illness. Mr. Cunningham was born Nov. 28, 1918, in Palmyra, the son of William and Mabel Cunningham. The funeral home proudly flew the U.S. Army flag in honor of his service during World War II. He was retired from Abram Cleason Company in Palmyra, where he was employed as a driver. Mr. Cunningham was a member of the August Mauer Post 286 American Legion in Newark, and the Arcadia Reformed Church of Newark. Mr. Cunningham is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Doris Schmitt Cunningham; his son, Richard M. (Janet) Cunningham of Newark: his daughter, Joan (Fred) McGowan of Newark; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, brother, Homer Cunningham of Macedon Center; and several nieces and nephews.

Mona Lisa Draeger - Mona Lisa Draeger, 51, of Clyde, died on Feb. 24, 1999 as the result of a car accident in Galen. Mona was born in Guaymas, Mexico, on Sept. 27, 1947. She was the daughter of Edward and Oveda Cornelius. She had been employed by the Brisky Supply Co. of Clyde for the past two years as a receptionist, and prior to that had been employed for Rite-Aid Pharmacy in Lyons, and the Osmen's Family Restaurant in Newark. Surviving are one daughter, Gwendolyn Mary Colfels, of West Roxbury, MA; three stepdaughters, Nancy (Michael) Colt of Chicago, IL, Claudia (Ray) Hodges of Doylestown, PA, and Sybil (Joseph) Hill, of Greenwich, CO; and her former husband, Mr. Richard Colfels of St. Petersburg, FL.

Joseph E. DeSanto Sr. - Joseph E. DeSanto Sr., died on Monday, March 1, 1999, at Rochester General Hospital. Mr. DeSanto was born on March 28, 1916, in Clyde, the son of Rocco and Angeline Jemmerino DiSanto. He was retired from the Fold-Pak Company of Newark as a press operator. He was an avid woodworker and inventor, making designs for furniture and other items. He was a member of St. Michael's Church in Lyons. He was a WWII veteran, having served in the Navy. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John (Cindy) Shipley and Mrs. Gerry (Corinne) Dilgard, both of Newark; his two sons, Joseph (Marty) Jr. of Sodus Point and James of Mt. Verde, FL; one brother, Henry (Angie) of Clyde, four sisters, Emma Quataro of Geneva, Lucy Ubiergo of Newark, Louise Blanch of Lyons and Flo Kowalczyk of Liverpool; 10 grandchildren: seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Bennett and Mamie D'Augustine; and a brother, Rocco DiSanto.

Megan DeCook - Megan DeCook, 31, of Pelis Road in Newark, died at home on Monday, March 1, 1999. Megan was born on April 3, 1967 and graduated from Midlakes High School in 1985. She attended Herkimer County Community College, graduating in 1987. She was employed as an occupational therapist by the Seneca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Megan is survived by her husband, Mark; daughters, Stacey and Taylor; her parents, Barry and Elfleda Powell of Phelps; grandfather, Lyle Powell of Geneva; mother-in-law, Patricia DeCook Zeitlin; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sally Ayako Oda Pratt - Sally Ayako Oda Pratt, 77, of Wailuku Maui, Hawaii, formerly of Newark, died on Feb. 9, 1999, at Maui Memorial Medical Center. She is survived by her son, Peter (Wendy) Pratt of Wailuku, HI; three daughters, Edith (Michael) Hill of Rochester, Naomi Pratt of Pearl City, Oahu, HI, and Wanda (James) Interlichia of Vancouver, WA.; six grandchildren, Laura and Adam Hill of Rochester, Nadine Pratt of Clifton Springs, Jill and Jason Interlichia of Vancouver, WA; Jesse Pratt of Hawaii; and other surviving relatives.

Daniel W. Critchlow - Daniel W. Critchlow, 32, of Palmyra, died on February 26, 1999. He is survived by his mother, Shirley Critchlow; his father, Richard (Roseanne) Critchlow; brothers, Richard (Heather) Critchlow and Tim Critchlow, sister, Debby Critchlow, grandparents, Warren and Kathryn Critchlow and Evelyn Emmons, several cousins.

Charles H. Gent - Charles H. Gent, 68, died Feb. 28, 1999. Mr. Gent lived in Lyons and was a retiree of Xerox Co. He is survived by Jane, his wife of 46 years; daughters, Neda (Mrs. James) Finney of Dry Fork, VA and Sandra (Mrs. George) Wilson of Rose; son, Charles Thomas of Newark; brothers, Walter (Joe) of N. Rose, Richard of Texas, TX; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Owen R. Huober - Owen R. Huober, of Davis Drive, Newark, died on March 3, 1999 at Genesee Hospital. He was born in Manchester, to Charles and Rachel Lewis Huober. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. He is survived by his wife, Martha; sisters Rosalie DeMarco, Helen Truini, Virginia DeMarco and brother-in-law Frank DeMarco; several nieces and nephews.

Falstick, Richard J. "Dick" - Richard J. "Dick" Falstick, of Woodside Drive, Newark, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 9. Mr. Falstick was born September 2, 1916 in Johnstown, PA, the son of Charles and Margaret (Baumgardner) Falstick. He was a manufacturer representative for over 32 years and retired in 1992. Dick was a 42-year member of the Newark Country Club. He had served in the US Army during World War II and was a member of the August Mauer Post American Legion. Interment in Newark Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Betty (Dascomb) Falstick; daughter Kim Falstick and "adopted daughter" Maureen Bolton, both of Ithaca; sister, Dorothy Knieriem of Baltimore; a niece and four nephews, including Robert Knieriem of Baltimore.

Waldorf, Lynn H. - Lynn H. Waldorf, 91, of Newark, died on March 7, 1999, at Via Health of Wayne in Newark. Mr. Waldorf was born Dec. 9, 1907, in Seneca Falls, the son of Dr. Henry and Fannie Amidon Waldorf. He worked for over 30 years for Bloomer Brothers in Newark. From there he worked for the Wayne County Civil Defense, Comstock Foods and Caves Lumber in Newark. Mr. Waldorf had been a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years and had served on the Administrative Board. He was also a charter member of the Newark-Arcadia Volunteer Ambulance and served on the Boy Scout Council Troop 122 and was a member of the Lemonade Society. Interment in the Riverside Cemetery in Phelps. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irene Lockner Waldorf; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon (Edward) Tellier of Newark, Lynne (Fritz) Ring of Illinois and Anita (Mickey) Ruffalo of Georgia; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Atkinson and Mae Haney.

Bitler, Jonathan - Jonathan Bitler, 38, of Los Angeles, formerly of Williamson, died suddenly on March 3, 1999. He is survived by parents, Forrester "Bud" (Mary) Bitler of Williamson; sister, Loralee (Roy) Wilferth of Sodus; brother, Terry Lee (Miriam) Bitler of Newark; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Snyder, Marie J. - Marie J. Snyder, of Wolcott, age 90, died March 6, 1999 at Via Health, Newark Campus. Mrs. Snyder was born in Adams, NY on December 17, 1908, the daughter o+ Arthur and Cora (Larkins) Wool. She was a graduate of Adams High School and a business school in Watertown. After moving to Wolcott she worked for O & C (Reckitt & Colman) until she retired in 1973. Marie was a member of the North Rose Assembly of God Church. Interment in Huron Evergreen Cemetery. She is predeceased by her husband, Harold, who died in 1992. She is survived by sons, Arnold Edmonds of Newark, Bob (Sandy) Marshall of Wolcott; daughter, Donna (Ed) Emmons of NYC; grandchildren, great-grandchildren.

Foley, Willadell A. - Willadell A. Foley, 88, of Newark, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at the Brightonian Nursing Home in Rochester. Mrs. Foley was born June 1, 1910, in Homewood, Illinois, the daughter of Oscar and Linnie Waite Allen. She taught school in Nyack. She had live in Nyack, and in Cape Neddick, Maine.No calling hours. She is survived by daughter, Cathleen Foley MacInnes of Walworth; son, Michael K. (Christine) of Poughkeepsie; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul, and daughter, Clare.

Maslyn, Carl E. - Carl E. Maslyn, 84, of 38734 North Ave., Zephyrhills, Florida, formerly of Lyons, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 at Zephyr Haven Nursing Home in Florida. Carl was born July 8, 1914, in Phelps, the son of Peter and Emily Mesleyn. He had lived in Lyons until 1976. He is survived by Dorothy Maslyn, his wife of 54 years; children, Thea (Tom) Hall, Loren (Lynne) of Lyons, and Darlene (Norm) Hughson of Newark; grandchildren, Amy Maslyn, Erin Maslyn, Brian Maslyn, Kevin Hall and Jeremy Hughson: sisters, Lucy (Jim) Johnson and Lena Maslyn, both of Newark, and Emma Fisher of Rochester. He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

Smith, Priscilla Bronson - Priscilla Bronson Smith, 91, died on March 5, 1999 at The Highlands at Pittsford. Mrs. Smith was born to Edwin W. and Gertrude Matthews Bronson, June 14, 1907, in Albion. She was a 1930 graduate of Wells College. She was active in Girl Scouts and the Red Cross Blood Donor Program. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church in Newark, a charter member of the Holly Twig, ViaHealth of Wayne-Newark Hospital, the Travelers Club of Newark and honorary member of the Katherine Hopkins Art Reading Club in Geneva. She taught mathematics for two years and, while living in Geneva, worked at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the library. She was married to Kendrick J. Smith for 65 years, before his passing on Sept. 27, 1997. Interment in Mt. Albion Cemetery. Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla "Bonnie" (Stewart) Maurer of South Carolina and Ann (Frederick) Hovey of Michigan; grandchildren, Andy Maurer, Rick Hovey and Liza Hovey; and many friends.

Dishaw, Frederick J. - Frederick J. Dishaw, 62, of Buffalo Rd., Newark, died March 8, 1999 at his home. Fred was born June 16, 1936, in Massena, the son of the late Leon and Vivian Moody Dishaw. He was an auto mechanic in the area for 30 years. He had lived in the area since 1963 and served in the US Army in Germany from 1954-56, and in the US Army Reserves for eight years. He is survived by his wife, Iris; two daughters, Lori Dishaw of Sodus and Kimberlie Dishaw of Palmyra; four sons, Frederick L. (Jackie) of Newark, James (Patricia) of Palmyra, Terry (Judy) of Newark, and Brian (Becky) of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sally (Gerald) VanLare of Brasher Falls and Kay (Franklin) Eldridge of Massena; two brothers, Daniel (Jackie) of Helena and Leland (Audrey) of Massena; his mother, Margaret Dishaw of Helena; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence Dishaw.

Freeland, Isabelle E. - Isabelle E. Freeland, 88, of Palmyra, died March 9, 1999. Interment at Macedon Cemetery. She is survived by her children: Betty (Roger) Morrison, Beverly (Leon) Case, Harold (Laurie) Freeland, and Carol (Ed) Bastian; foster son, Lloyd (Karen) Merkley; 26 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister Marian Malinowski. Isabelle was predeceased by her husband Clarence, grandson Randy Freeland, and sister Florence Allen.

Cheney, Ralph B. - Ralph B. Cheney, 67, of Marion, died March 9, 1999. He was a Korean Veteran and retired from General Railway Signal. Ralph was a member of the Palmyra American Legion, James R. Hickey Post #120. He is survived by his sister, Agnes Jenney of Marion; nephews, Ralph, Bert Jr. Cheney; a niece, Virginia (Gregory) Brown of Rochester.

VanHorn, Arlene - Arlene VanHorn, 86, of Palmyra and Blossom View Nursing Home, died March 9, 1999. Before living at Blossom View, she was a resident at the Joanne Lawliss Family Care Home for eight years. Interment in Marion Cemetery. She retired in 1969 from Garlock Company of Palmyra and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newark. Interment in Fairville Cemetery. Appleman, Stanley L. - Stanley L. Appleman, 87, of Clifton Springs, died March 11, 1999. Interment in Marion Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mable Haak Appleman; daughter, Carol Ann Appleman of East Rochester; son, Larry (Sally) Appleman of Rochester; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Hotel, Lena - Lena Hotel, 82, of Marion, died March 15, 1999. She was a member of the Palmyra Moose, the Women's Auxiliary of the Marion Fire Dept., United Church of Marion, and Marion Senior Citizens. Interment in Marion Cemetery. Lena is survived by three daughters: Angie (Robert) Kniest Sr. of Port Gibson; Alice (Paul) Clarcq of Wolcott; Arlene Smith of Palmyra; son, Loran (Naomi) Hotel, Sr.; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, David.

Davis, Marjorie - Marjorie Taylor Davis, 72, of Woodhill Apartments, died Sunday, March 14, at her home. Interment be in the Riverview Cemetery. Mrs. Davis was born March 27, 1926, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth Jones Taylor. She was a graduate of Brockport State Teachers College and, at one time, was an elementary school teacher in Newark and Long Island. Most recently, she was a substitute teacher in the Newark School District. Marjorie was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and a senior on the Board of Directors of the Newark Historical Society. She was an avid reader and had served on the Board of Directors of the Newark Public Library. Marjorie enjoyed golf and was a member of the Newark County Club. She is survived by a daughter, Jane (Louis) Perlaky of Sagamore Hills, OH; two sons, Craig (Jennifer) Davis of Oakland, CA and Christopher Davis of Newark; four grandchildren, Louis, Emma Jane, Griffin and Skye; sister, Doris Ives of East Amherst, NY; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Taylor in 1998.

Burcroff, Donald L. - Donald L. Burcroff, 77, died Monday, March 15, 1999 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Donald was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Wolcott, the son of Jay and Lulu Waite Burcroff. He was a supervisor at the Newark Developmental Center, retiring in 1984. Donald had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ila (Puls) Burcroff; daughter, Beth Allen of Rochester; son, Roger (Mischelle) Burcroff of Clearwater, FL; three grandchildren, Jay Allen, and Angelo and Kimberly Klamecki; three great-granddaughters, Meghan, Alessandra and Neve; two brothers, Larry Burcroff of Scipio Center and Raymond Burcroff of Wolcott; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Violia Keukelaar.

Smith, Earl M. - Earl M. Smith, 85, of Newark died February 15, 1999.

Garcia, Juan R. - Juan R. Garcia, 43, of North Main Street, Newark, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Newark Hospital/Via Health of Wayne. Juan was born Aug. 17, 1955, in Maunabo, Puerto Rico, the son of Carmello and Ana Amaro Garcia. He worked for seven years for IEC in Newark and was a Newark resident for 21 years. Interment in Maunabo, Puerto Rico. He is survived by a sister, Elba (Miguel) Rodriguez of Yabocca, Puerto Rico; and his beloved companion of 15 years, Shirley Sears of Newark.

Crellin, Doris E. - Doris E. Crellin, 90, of VanDusen St., Newark, died March 17, 1999 at home. She was born October 20, 1908. She was a retired school teacher, a member of Park Presbyterian Church, and an avid bridge player. Interment in Macedon Center Cemetery. She is survived by a nephew, Bruce Cox, Valley Forge, PA.

Hannan, Raymond - Raymond G. Hannan, 73, died March 24, 1999 at home on Highland Avenue, Newark. He is survived by Rita, his wife of 52 years; a daughter, Eileen (Bohdan) Ersteniuk of Newark; four sons, Raymond (Lois) and David, M.D. (friend Pam Tobin), both of Newark, Kenneth (Pam) of Clifton Park, and Thomas, of Denver, Colorado; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two daughters, Roberta Lee and Mary, two brothers and a sister. Ray Hannan was born March 18, 1926, in Rochester, the son of Thomas and Margaret McCubrey Hannan. After 40 years, he retired in 1986 from Chase Manhattan Bank in Rochester, where he was Senior Vice President. At one time, he had been a branch manager for the former Lincoln Rochester Bank in Newark. Hannan was a graduate of Rutgers Graduate School of Banking. He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the North Atlantic. Ray was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, where he was the parish business manager. He had been a trustee for the Village of Newark from 1965 to 1971. He had served on the board of directors of the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. He was a past President of both the Newark Country Club and of the Newark Chamber of Commerce. Hannan was a member of the Newark Elks Lodge, August Mauer Post American Legion, Newark Lions Club and the Rochester Rotary Club. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester.

Eligh, Alice - Alice Eligh, 93, of Newark, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at ViaHealth of Wayne, Newark. Her husband Alex Eligh died on March 1, 1999. Mrs. Eligh was born the daughter of Charles and Carolina Barr Burke on September 9, 1905, in Ontario, Canada. She was married to Alexander Eligh on September 4, 1926. Interment at White Haven Memorial Park, Perinton. She is survived by her sister, Emily Castledine, of Ontario, Canada; sister-in-law Eula Burke of Ontario, Canada; nephews William (Susan) Eligh of Homer, NY, Jack (Nancy) Eligh of Macedon, and Willard (Mary Ellen) Burke Jr. of Ontario; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews in the United States and Canada.

Walters, Mary Alice - Mary Alice Walters, 77, of South Main St., died March 17, 1999 at her home. Mary was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Newark the daughter of Frederick and Helen Downey DeCann. Interment in Newark Cemetery. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Diane) Deppen of Newark; son-in-law, George Reiss; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ethel Gale, Fran DeCann and Eleanor Vermeulen, all of Newark, and Ruth Collier of Wolcott; two brothers, Alan DeCann of Florida and Bob DeCann of Newark; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Melanchton in 1987; and daughter, Carol Reiss in 1998.

Davis, Alison C. - Alison C. Davis, 43, formerly of Rice St., Lyons, died March 18, 1999 at Via Health in Newark. Alison was born Nov. 23, 1955, in Newark, New Jersey, had worked for IEC and Seneca Foods in Newark, NY. She had lived in Lyons for 20 years. Interment in South Lyons Cemetery. She is survived by daughter, Christa Davis of Clyde; four sons, William Jr. of Lyons, and Ephraim, Andrew and Emmanuel of Clyde; and granddaughter, Trinity Van Houte of Clyde. She was predeceased by her husband, William in June 1996.

Marsh, Mary S. - Mary S. Marsh, 94, of Newark, died March 19, 1999 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Mrs. Marsh was born March 17, 1905 in Buffalo, the daughter of Karl and Ada Coster Schantz. She was a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts and was president of the class of 1926. She had taught at the Newark Developmental Center for many years, retiring in 1975. Mary was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She had been a volunteer with the Wayne County Chapter, American Red Cross and a member of the Sodus Bay Historical Society and the American Assoc. of University Women. Interment in Newark Cemetery. She is survived by daughter, Jane (Norman) Ainslie of Schenectady; two sons, Ellicott R. (Christine) Marsh of Endicott and David L. (Louise) Marsh of Gloucester, MA; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" (Raymond) DePauw of Newark and Wilhelmina Inskeep of Englewood, FL; and dear friend Ella DeCracker of Newark. She was predeceased by her husband Elliott Marsh in 1975, brothers John Schantz and Karl Schantz, Jr.

Sadler, Edith M. - Edith M. Sadler, 88, formerly of Spa Apartments, Clifton Springs, died March 19, 1999 at Blossom View Nursing Home, Sodus. Edith was born Feb. 16, 1911, in Macedon Center. She had lived in Shortsville prior to moving into the Spa Apartments in 1976. Mrs. Sadler was retired from Mobil Chemical in Macedon and was a member of the Clifton Springs Methodist Church. Interment in Whitney Cemetery, Seneca Castle. Edith is survived by three sons, Herbert (Charlene) Sadler of Layton, Utah, Alvin (Margaret) Sadler of Lyons, and James (Gail) Sadler of Newark; eight grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Sadler.

DeVries, Gordon J. - Gordon J. DeVries, 60, of 1401 Overlook Drive, Alliance, Ohio, died March 19, 1999 following a two-week illness. Mr. DeVries, son of William and Jennie DeVries, was born in Canandaigua on February 21, 1939. He was married for 40 years to Susan (Sudduth) DeVries. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1957 and from the Rochester Business College with an associate's degree. Mr. DeVries spent his entire business career in plastic packaging and for the last 20 years was president of DeVries Packaging, Inc., which he founded in Alliance. Mr. DeVries was preceded in death by an older brother and his parents. He leaves his wife, Susan, and three daughters all in Ohio: Judy Lynn Serra, Janet Lee Scholidon and Jill Lyda DeVries; four grandchildren; brothers, Donald of Brewster (NY) and William of Macedon. Additional surviving family members include Sirkku Berg of Finland and Patrik Farm of Sweden.

Nevelizer, Albert J. - Albert J. Nevelizer, 69, of Marion died March 23, 1999. Albert was a Korean War veteran and a retired shovel operator for C.J. Nevelezer Excavating Co. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1430. Interment in Marion Cemetery. Kline, Diane L. - Diane L. Kline, 53, of North Main St., Newark died March 25, 1999 at the ViaHealth - Newark Campus. Diane was born September 27, 1945 in Seneca Falls to William and Eleanor Bennett VanCleef. She had worked for Jamesway and Woolworth's in Newark. Diane was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, the VFW Post 2883 Auxiliary and American War Dads Post 286 Auxiliary, both in Newark, and American Legion Post 457 Auxiliary in Phelps. Interment in East Newark Cemetery. Diane is survived by her husband of 33 years Duane Kline; two sons, SSGT Derrick (Tina) Kline and PFC Darrin Kline; daughter Melissa Kline; grandchildren Molly, Alyssa, Matthew, Joshua, Brittany, Michael and Caleb; her mother Eleanor VanCleef of Newark; brothers Martin (Sharon) VanCleef of Clifton Springs, Gail (Linda) VanCleef of Newark, William (Judy) VanCleef of Florida and Clinton VanCleef of Ontario; sister Eleanor Updyke of Seneca Falls; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many, many friends. Her father William predeceased her.

Chatfield, Laverne K. - Laverne K. Chatfield, 77, of Marbletown Rd, died March 25, 1999 at his home. Mr. Chatfield was born in Wolcott on March 30, 1921, the son of Jesse and Elizabeth Chatfield. He was a supervisor at the Newark Developmental Center, retiring in 1976. Laverne was a member of the New York Central Hose Company #5 of the Newark Fire Dept. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific theater. He is survived by his wife Edna, a son Raymond (Linda) Chatfield of Rochester, a granddaughter Kira and grandson Adam Chatfield. Also surviving are three brothers, Donald 'Pete' of Newark, James of Wolcott, Charles of Rochester, four sisters Sarah "Judy" Marsh, Florence Harrison both of Wolcott, Mary Ambrosiano of Red Creek, Joyce Royce of Huron; several nieces and nephews.

Patric, Ann - Ann Patric, 68, of Marion, died March 26, 1999. She was predeceased by her husband, George Patric. She is survived by four sons: Michael (Patti) of Farmington, Daniel of Farmington, David (Lori) of Webster and William (Dawn) of Massachusetts; five grandchildren; sister, Alice (Robert) Brandt, of Ohio.

Matthys, Cora M. - Cora M. Matthys, 83, formerly of the Rose Garden Apartments, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at ViaHealth - Newark Campus. Cora was born the daughter of Marinus and Sarah Steurrys VanDeVelde, on April 19, 1915, in Marion. She retired from Hanover Corp. in Newark, where she was employed as an inspector. She was a 30-year member of the American Legion Post 286 Auxiliary in Newark. Interment in Newark Cemetery. Mrs. Matthys is survived by her sons: Richard Matthys of Newark and Donald (Erika) Matthys of Virginia; daughters, Shirley (Kenneth) Warner and Dorothy Furman, both of Newark; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; her brother, Marinus (Doris) VanDeVelde Jr. of Marion; and sister-in-law, Elsie Morgan of Sodus.

Van Parys, Marie E. - Marie E. Van Parys, 92, of Atwater Street, died March 24, 1999, in Fort Pierce, FL. Mrs. Van Parys was born Feb. 17, 1907, in Belgium, the daughter of Joseph and Emma Landuyt Vandenbussche. She had worked at the Newark Developmental Center for many years, retiring in 1972. She was also a communicant of St. Michael's Church. Interment in Port Gibson Cemetery.She is survived by her daughter, Jean (Homer) Smith of Palmyra; five sons, Hank (Betty Mae) of Red Hook, Roger (Barbara) of Citrus Heights, CA, Harold "Ike" (Dorothy) of Pultneyville, Joseph (Shirley) of Scottsdale, AR, and Louis (Marge) of Venezuela; 30 grandchildren; many, many great-grandchildren; brother, Bernard Vandenbussche of Newark; and sister, Agnes Diestel of Westbury, NY. She was predeceased by her husband, Jacob Van Parys who died May 26, 1991.

McCarthy, Zackary M. - Zackary M. McCarthy, 12, of North Main Street, Savannah, died suddenly on Wednesday, March 24, 1999. Zackary was a 6th grade student at the Clyde-Savannah. He was also a member of the Wolcott Presbyterian Church Youth Group. Interment in the Wells Cemetery, Little Genesee, NY. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Linda and Scott Haines of Savannah; father and stepmother, Richard and Rae Lynn McCarthy of Bergen; sister, Holly; three brothers, Andrew, Daniel and Nathaniel; grandparents, Richard and Beverly Monroe of Bolivar; Lawrence P. and Jo Ann McCarthy of Hornell; Elton L. and Charlotte Haines of Portville; and Raymond and Kathleen Johnson of Allegany; special aunt and uncle, Sara and Jeff Shields of Savannah; aunts, uncles and cousins. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Lyons Police Dept. D.A.R.E. Program, 72 William St., Lyons 14489, the Wayne County Sheriff's D.A.R.E. Program, Lyons 14489, or to the Wolcott Presbyterian Church, West Main Street, Wolcott 14590.

DeRue, Carrie J. - Carrie DeRue, 90, of E. Miller Street, Newark, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Via Health of Wayne, Newark. Carrie was born Oct. 31, 1908, in Ontario, the daughter of Abraham and Josie Gysels Sanders. She retired in 1973 from C.H. Stuart Company of Newark. She had also worked at Jackson & Perkins Company for 15 years. Interment in Fairville Cemetery. She is survived by daughter, Mrs. James (Janet) Heald of Newark; son, Gerald (Mary) DeRue of Newark; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Marinus in 1968; brothers, Isaac and Wilford Sanders; a sister, Jennie Michealson, and a granddaughter, Michelle DeRue in 1998.

Kuhle, Rose Zarola - Rose Zarola Kuhle, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, in Lancaster, California. Services were held March 24 in Lancaster, CA. She is survived by her children: MaryAnn, Thomas, Paula, William, James (Jinell), Kenneth (Jarrina); grandsons Jeremy, Jordan, David, and Nathan; mother, Anna Zarola Mozgowiec; sisters, Veneranda Hannon, Mary (Dick) Kahl; brother, John Zarola; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her father, Juiseppe Zarola and husband Stanley.

Derks, Arthur - Arthur Derks, 85, of Marion, died March 31, 1999. He was retired from Garlock. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Daryl) Corteville of Palmyra, Linda (Mark) Haskins of Marion; two sons, Fred (Patricia) Derks of Rochester, David (Donna) Derks of Penfield; dear friend, Anne Dierks; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene Derks of Webster; three sisters, Marjorie (Peter) Yaskow of Williamson, Josephine Montondo of Sodus, Irene Greene of Pennsylvania. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Jeff DeLyser Memorial Award, c/o Marion Central School.
