John was born the son of Jan and Johanna Huisman VanDorp in Vlaardingen near Rotterdam on January 27, 1927. John was the second oldest of six children. It was a hard time in the Netherlands after the German invasion and his parents had to send him away from home when he was 14 to work as a farm hand for neighbors of John's grandparents in Schipluiden. After the War ended, John and two of his brothers joined the Dutch Army. While he was in the army, serving in Arnhem, he met his future wife, Nellie. John's two brothers were sent to fight in Indonesia, but rather than send three men of one family to a war zone, the army excused John so that he could go to United States to work as a farm hand for his uncle in North Carolina. After working in North Carolina for a year, he went back to the Netherlands and married Nellie. Three days after the wedding, they took a ship back to the US, to North Carolina via Hoboken, New Jersey. Terra Ceia, North Carolina was their first home. They had four children, John, Will, Joan and Lucy by 1955. When Nellie's family moved from the Netherlands to Kingston, Ontario, around 1955, John and Nellie decided to move closer to them and settled on the current family farm in Marion. Three more children, Cookie, Rick and Tim, were born in Wayne County. In addition to farming, John worked in several construction jobs, and drove a school bus in Marion for 27 years. Over the years, he served in many leadership roles in the East Palmyra Christian Reformed Church and Christian School. John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Nellie; seven children: John (Nancy), Will (Elizabeth), Joan (Rich) Hornbeck, Lucy (John) Knape, Cookie (Geoff) Baker, Rick, and Tim (Linda); seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
