Planning a bigger, better Heritage Festival

Marion Heritage Festival Director, Robin Boerman is on the phone once again accepting even more vendors for the coming Marion Heritage Festival. So far, Boerman has 35 vendors ready to line Marion's Main Street on August 23 and 24. On the other side of town, Festival committee member, Duane Fisher, is finalizing the fifty-two plus units that will be participating in the Magnificent Main Street Parade slated for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

After long debates this past winter, the Marion Heritage Festival Committee decided to make some big changes in its annual festival. The committee broke with tradition and changed the long standing date of the first Saturday in September to a two-day event. Boerman attributed the change to the great town support of the event each year. "People wanted more time to enjoy all the fun and entertainment and each year we received more vendor applications and more interest on the part of entertainers. It made sense to expand the event."

Crafters, vendors and food booths will be open both Saturday and Sunday. Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, the second annual Marion Mile takes off downtown. Center Stage Entertainment begins at 10 a.m. and lasts all day Saturday featuring country music from the Cannon Ball Express, folk music from Fiddlesticks, and popular acoustic guitar music from the new and upcoming group, A.L.A. featuring Marion's own Diane Genovese and Seneca Falls resident, Gerry Ortego.

Look for some fun dancing demonstrations from the Wayne Westerners and Lakeside Country Cloggers, plus an exciting demo from the Kuk Sool Won school of martial arts. Llamas from the Wind in the Willows Farm in Newark will be on hand with some fun facts about raising llamas. St. Gregory's Church is hosting a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament which is still open for 4 person teams. Also on Saturday, take a step back in history by visiting the Marion Museum or take a peek at the exquisite quilt work taking place in the Elementary School auditorium.

Then get ready for a brand new event! Music and dancing fill Marion's Main Street. Starting at 6 p.m. in the center of town, it's a free Saturday Nite Street Dance featuring a live DJ from Jammin' Sound Systems! The event is geared toward the whole family and will last until 10 p.m.

Sunday the fun begins all over at noon with St. Gregory's Beef Bar-B-Q and the Marion Fire Department's annual Chicken Bar-B-Q. Watch out for speeding beds racing down Main Street at 12:30. The Magnificent Main Street Parade begins at 1 p.m. with clowns, bands, fancy cars, famous people, and a couple of surprises. A concert by the Marion Community Band, Savannah Cellar Savers and the Canaltown Chorale round out the Sunday afternoon entertainment along with the finale of the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

Festival Director Robin Boerman is excited about this year's events especially since good weather is predicted. "No hurricanes expected this year, just good old sunshine and fun times," she says smiling.
