B. L. Humeston Saloon
Pictured is the business establishment of B.L.
Humeston. Bennett L. Humeston is seen standing in the doorway (circa 1885) of the building
located on the northeast corner of Pearl and Main. The advertising sign is for Rochester's
Bartholomay Beer.
In the second picture (undated): Spring's high waters forced Mr.
Humeston to raise the building. B.L. still stands near the doorway, but the building now
sports a high masonry foundation, a Pepsi-Cola sign and the word "Saloon." Also
note the fire hydrant - B.L. Humeston was a charter member of NY Central Hose Company #5.

According to the Newark Union-Gazette, B.L. died Thanksgiving Day, November 21, 1940. "He conducted a restaraunt business here for more than 30 years and was later employed by Bloomer Bros. Company..."
TODAY - As of this writing in June 1997, B.L.'s fire helmet hangs over the mantel of the NY Central Hose Co. on North Main Street - the only Arcadia Firehouse left standing. The helmet was donated by B.L's grandson, Lindorf Pulver. He recalls that one of the buildings in the second picture was a blacksmith shop. Mr. Pulver is also a member of the Hose Co., as was his father, Park Pulver, and B.L's son, Ira.
