Welcome to Newark, NY
Newark is located in the Town of Arcadia in the south-central
portion of Wayne County. Just a short drive from
Lake Ontario, the scenic Finger Lakes region, and the NYS
Thruway, Newark is 35 miles east of Rochester on Route 31.
The 2000 census shows the Village population at 9,682 governed by a Mayor and four trustees.
Services include those provided by the Newark Volunteer Fire
Department, the
Newark-Arcadia Volunteer Ambulance Corps, (located close to a 206-bed Hospital), modern
senior citizen housing, public playgrounds and varied shopping options.
The Town of Arcadia
has a population of nearly 15,000 (figures includes the village pop.), and is governed by a Supervisor
and four council members. The town is currently expanding its water service
area, and boasts some of the finest scenery in the county. Two volunteer fire
departments protect the residents who live outside the village limits. In 2001,
Arcadia homes were sold at an average price of about $93,000.
There is a Cornell Cooperative Extension
Center, a Career Resource Center, an education
Resource Center and an extension center of the
Finger Lakes Community
College.
Situated in a county known for its beautiful rural countryside, the Village of Newark
has been referred to as the county's commercial and industrial "hub." All the
world is familiar with products made in Newark, including those from Hallagan Mfg. Co.,
IEC Electronics, Spinco Metal Products,
North American
Filter Corp., Refractron, Ultralife Batteries,
Inc., Legendary Auto, and
Micro-Tech. Focused on industrial and commercial development, the village Industrial Park
has 61 acres.
The Hoffman
Clock Museum features many American and European time pieces and is located in
the Newark Public Library. The Arcadia Historical
Society Museum and Marbletown Schoolhouse are also historic treasures.
The historic Erie Canal winds through the village, highlighted by the T. Spencer Knight
Park. Its docking facilities are equipped with electricity and within walking distance of
restaurants, overnight accommodations, groceries, retail shops and a six-screen movie
theater. There is a Visitor's Center on the north bank and a handicapped
accessible ramp on the south bank.
Other parks also offer relaxation and
recreation:
- Colburn Park, home to sporting events, including a Youth football League
and P.A.L.
baseball
- Central Park - Newarkfest, summer evening concerts, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, the Christmas Tree Lighting.
- In Perkins Park, situated between two of the District's five school
buildings, you'll find
soccer games and softball. There is a pavilion for picnics, a
baseball diamond, basketball courts, even a winding brook.
Other favorite spots for recreation and relaxation include
the Alex Eligh Community Center, Perkins Field (where the kids play baseball
and tee-ball), the Frey St. park, Elliott Park and Silver Hills Technology Park (take the
kids to feed the ducks).
You can enjoy a day of golf, stroll a farm market or relax at a local Bed
& Breakfast Inn.
