Savannah, NY Hometown Page
The Town is currently populated by fewer that 50 persons per square mile. The 1990 census showed the total population at about 1,770 - the lowest in the county of about 90,000.
Savannah is home to the award-winning Savannah
Cellarsavers, New York's only all-brass marching band.
Savannah, named for its swampy, low ground, also celebrates its geology as part of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex. Over half of the town's land has been acquired by the state for the Complex project, to protect, restore and enhance wildlife in the area. The Complex encompasses nearly 36,000 acres not only in Wayne County, but also in neighboring Cayuga and Seneca Counties.
Residents are hopeful that the Complex, and its new Visitor's Center will bring new life to Savannah in the form of tourism. Townspeople have resurrected a Chamber of Commerce that is now active in promoting and developing tourism opportunities.
With one of the lower property tax rates in the county, the average single-family home sold for just over $54,000 in 1999. Copyright
