Welcome to Williamson

In
north western Wayne County, Williamson welcomes visitors to their town's many
events held in the midst of magnificent rural scenery - fruit orchards, historic
sites and an impressive Lake Ontario view.
Williamson celebrates its historic roots all year long, with several
events throughout the town. The rich history is especially plentiful in the
hamlet of Pultneyville. It is home to historic Gates Hall, where a Gilbert &
Sullivan production is staged each year. The Pultneyville Historical Society
hosts Candlelight Cemetery tours each autumn, and features fine exhibits at its
Mill St. house. The Society holds a Homecoming celebration every third Saturday
in each July.
Each
spring, area residents welcome the bountiful apple crop when the blossoms arrive
in May. For 40 years, the Apple Blossom Festival has been the season's first
county celebration - crafts, entertainment, carnival, fireworks and the Queen's
Coronation. Wayne County is the number one apple-producing county in all of
NewYork State, harvesting millions of pounds (- the 1992 figure was over 370
million pounds). There are also cherries (almost 14 million pounds), pears (over
5 million pounds)... LOTS of orchards along the beautiful countryside.
The picturesque coastline, on the NY Seaway Trail, boasts one of upstate's
most beautiful green spaces - the B. Forman Park is 25 acres and includes the
county's most updated facilities.
Williamson
is governed by a Town Supervisor and a four-person Town Council. Until U.S.
Census figures are released for 2000, the town's population is estimated at
6,540. In 2001, the average sale price of a single-family home was almost
$96,000. The
2000 roll puts the 2,171 residential parcels with an average assessed value at
$92,399. The town's major manufacturing employer is Cadbury-Scweppes, Inc.
The community has many fine organizations, including the Williamson Chamber
of Commerce, the Williamson Recreation Committee, and the Come-Unity Center,
which includes a downtown thrift shop and a food distribution.
The
Williamson-Sodus Airport caters to small aircraft and has undergone several
upgrades in recent years. There is a Flying Club and The Williamson
Conservation & Sporting Club, active in education, safety and
recreation.
If you're in the area and want a real feel for the roots of Wayne County,
Williamson is the place to see.
